How to play Colordle
Guess a color name. The percent is 100 minus the CIEDE2000 distance, folded with an absolute value so it stays positive.
Colordle is a daily color-name game. The hidden answer is a name such as sage or cobalt, backed by a hex value. You never type the hex. You type the name, and the board tells you how close that paint is.
Type a color name
The field accepts 31,907 names from the color-names collection. Matching ignores spaces and letter case, so “Navy Blue” and “navyblue” are the same guess. Suggestions appear after two characters. “Test color” stays off until the field is an exact list name.
The circle above the field previews that guess. It is your color, not the hidden one. After a win, the circle switches to the answer.
Read the percent
Both hex values are converted to CIE Lab. CIEDE2000, recommended in CIE Publication 142-2001, measures the difference. Sharma, Wu, and Dalal (Color Research and Application, 2005, DOI 10.1002/col.20070) document the formula and note that a delta E near 1 is a typical threshold for a small visual difference.
The board shows the absolute value of 100 minus that delta E, with two decimal places. 100.00% is a win. A guess at 40% is a long way off in Lab space, even if the everyday names sound related. The newest guess sits on top. Older guesses sort from closest to farthest.
Move closer
Keep the name with the higher percent and search around it. The solver lists nearby names for a guess you supply. It does not open the daily answer. A shorter clue for the current day, first letter and hue family, is on the hint page.
One color each Eastern day
The dated puzzle changes at midnight US Eastern. Day 500 is August 7, 2023. Your browser stores guesses, the streak, and the set of names you have tried. If the day changes before a win, the streak resets. A win carries the streak forward. Unlimited practice uses the same percent and does not touch that streak.
The current day number is on Colordle today. The name is on answer today when you want it. The pool of names that can be chosen as the daily color is the color list.
How do you play Colordle?
Type a color name from the list and submit it. The game returns a percent. Higher means your hex is closer, in CIEDE2000, to the hidden color. The round ends at 100.00%.
Why was my guess rejected?
The name has to match the color list after spaces and capitalization are ignored. Invented names stay disabled until the field matches a stored name.
